The kentfix it company is a military subcontractor that designs and manufactures tactical equipment for the government of Ethiopia. Our stand in social media is very limited due to server security constraints. In the white paper listed bellow we would like to present an example of what type of information can be presented to the public through our company’s website and what can be presented using websites such as facebook and linkedin.
NOTE: Due to security reasons, I cannot state in details my current obligations. So, I compiled a series of events that best assimilate the company I work for.
You're not the only Boricua who can snowboard around here :P I'm not completely sure what the company's stance is on social media after reading the white paper.
ReplyDeleteI find it very hard to discuss topics on a company that hold secret information. The way I arranged the social media aspect of the paper, is by making the effect that my company is competing to obtain a contract from the government. My main points were targeted on customer relations and capability. There are a lot of changes that I need to make when it comes to communications. I have this engineering mindset that is certainly not helping me making a point across; for example, I need to stop writing in third person and past tense.

There is no doubt that social media can be used as a tool to reach citizens and deliver messages to them. However, I see two issues here, the first one is that in any society, you cannot guarantee that all citizens are familiar with social media and have access to it. The second one is security, especially that it is a "military problem!" It may not be easy to have control on who can access your information and so on!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the paper, Anexi!
FYI... I'm glad I'm not the only Boricua on a snowboard :-P
ReplyDeleteAnexi, policy around use of social media by the company and its employees is different from figuring out how to use social media in politically sensitive situations. Your white paper told more about the second than the first. In the company you describe, I would question whether any use of social media makes sense. Disallowing use of social media is a policy position as much as using it is. At a policy level, I want students to think about why using or not using social media makes sense for their company. If the company chooses to use social media, then policy will include acceptable and recommended uses.
